The buyer or investors you target can make or break your exit…

The problem is that the exit route itself is not always clear.

Although one particular pathway might stand out, there are always options.

So how do you figure out the best exit route – whether that’s a trade sale, becoming publicly listed – or somethng else?

Go back to first principles and decide on your motives for an exit.

Likely it’s a bit more complicated than maximising company valuation.

A direct listing or IPO may ultimately deliver you higher valuation multiples AND support growth through acquistion. But if the leadership team is lacking in ambition, then what’s the point?

Same with management buyouts. If you haven’t built the right senior leadership team – who are willing, able and funded to make it happen – you might want a rethink.

Deciding on the most appropriate exit route is a bit of a jigsaw and all the pieces need to fit together → the timeframe, the valuation multiples, the long term interests of the business – and whatever else is motivating the exit.
