What will 2024 look like for company owners exiting their business?

I was asked this a couple of times last week, so why not post about it?

This time last year, there was a 20 percent drop in UK business owners successfully selling their company, compared to the year before – and the value of those deals fell by nearly a third.

Part of the problem was that financing became harder for acquirers of those companies.

If we see improving economic conditions in the near future, what are the prospects for business owners looking to exit in 2024 or the next 24-48 months?

Well, I’m far more interested in the bigger picture and the macro-environment.

In the UK, the demographic trends are undeniable. More baby boomers are reaching “retirement” age, which is increasing the number of businesses put up for sale – or closed down.

But as more business owners are wising up to what’s really required to exit at a premium valuation, the M&A space is getting much more competitive.

So if you’re thinking about an exit in the next couple of years, you need to start taking action now…
