You’ve heard of buyer’s remorse…
But what about the phenomenon of ‘seller’s remorse’?
The feeling of mild regret after handing over the keys to your business upon exit?
If your business has been your ‘baby’ for as long as you can remember, the adjustment can be hard.
And sometimes there’s even a delayed reaction – especially if the new owners screw things up.
So here are some tips on turning regret into relief:
🟦 REMEMBER WHY YOU SOLD. Most owners who exit have at least one compelling reason for doing so. Don’t forget yours.
🟦 DITCH THE ROSE-TINTED SPECS. It’s easy to get nostalgic, so remember both the ups and downs of your pre-exit life.
🟦 CELEBRATE THE WINS. Be proud of all you achieved building the business and delivering a successful exit.
🟦 THE FUTURE. Entrepreneurs of all ages know there’s always another opportunity around the corner. What do they say? Life is about the journey, not the destination.
🟦 SHARE WITH OTHERS. Confide in nearest and dearest, but also gain perspectives from business partners who’ve been down a smilar road.
AND – if all else fails, consider a bid to regain control of your business. It happens more often than you might think 🙂
